Susan Boss

Susan Boss

Susan Boss makes non-traditional quilts in her studio in Easthampton,Mass and  teaches in Leverett. These are not ordinary quilts but vibrant fabric compositions that capture the eye and demand close inspection. Each piece is an original work. The quilts are improvisational in nature. Of the hundreds or thousands of individual pieces of fabric in a particular quilt no two pieces may be exactly the same size.

The ideas for Susan’s quilts come from many sources; from things that she has read, poetry, the natural world, even dreams. Both new and vintage fabrics are incorporated into the quilts. The older material brings a history to the prcess and to the work. o

Susan Boss says of her own work,”I am most strongly influenced by African American strip quilts.  The unpredictable design elements and their fearless use of color and pattern have inspired me. I feel indebted to the thousands of anonymous quilt makers whose efforts have informed my own process.”
