Leonore Alaniz
I learned my first trade, that of weaving, in Germany under Bauhaus–inspired teachers. Our focus was on art, and good design for the industry. Living in Leverett four-plus decades later, and working in my studio at LCA, affords me a sense of contentment on the quest to balance spiritual and material wealth. I am passionate about yoga, about simple and self-reliant living, and about right relations with nature through artisanal crafting. This entails weaving and surface designing cloth for interiors and apparel, sewing one-of-a-kind garments in ways that utilize the material fully. My botanical print work on fabric and paper has however taken on a life of its own.
The more I look, just in Leverett, the more plants I discover to print with. I captured to date the vitality and beauty of a few hundred specimen: Trees, shrubs, vegetables, weeds, mosses..... This method of direct imprinting foliage and plant parts is old and low-tech. It captivates the viewer and the doer, be it for the sake of art and/or science. It is my joy to share with others what is meaningful to me: The pleasure of whole cloth, the abundance of plants, and the rewards of yoga. For this reason I exhibit often and teach youth and adults.Â
